Description: Basidiocarp effuse, adnate, membranaceous when young, subceraceous and brittle when old, 50-300 μm thick in section excluding aculei. Hymenial surface cream, pale buff or pale yellowish white, grandinioid or odontioid, cracked when dry; margin paler, thinning out, pruinose. Aculei separate or fused, 6-8 per mm, conical, with fimbriate apices, 500-800 × 300-500 μm. Hyphal system monomitic; hyphae with clamp connections. Subiculum bi-layered: basal layer with dense texture, up to ca. 20 μm thick, colorless; hyphae horizontal, colorless, thick-walled; upper subiculum uniform with a loose texture, up to ca. 30 μm; hyphae colorless, thin- to slightly thick-walled, moderately ramified and somewhat interwoven, 2-4 μm diam. Subhymenium not clearly differentiated. Aculei trama with a dense texture; hyphae slightly flexuous, slightly thick-walled; terminal hyphae usually encrusted. Capitate cystidia numerous, embedded in subiculum and aculei trama, thin-walled, clamped at base, apical cap 5-8 um diam. Leptocystidia cylindrical or clavate, numerous in hymenium, immersed or projecting, thin-walled, with homogeneous contents, 34-51 × 6-9 μm. Basidia suburniform or subclavate with a median constriction, clamped at base, 4-sterigmate, 18.5-20 × 4-5 μm. Basidiospores narrowly ellipsoid, smooth, thin-walled, usually guttulate, IKI–, CB–, (4.2-) 4.4-5.3 (-5.6) × (2.5-) 2.8-3.3 (-3.5) μm.

Note: Hyphodontia heterocystidiata is characterized by a grandinioid or odontioid hymenophore with apically fimbriate aculei, capitate and cylindrical-clavate cystidia, and narrowly ellipsoid basidiospores. It resembles H. fimbriata Sheng H. Wu, but the latter has distinctly smaller basidiospores.
