Description: Colonies on PDA to 9 cm in diam in 4 days at 21℃, 10-30 mm or higher, turf dense, white at first, then becoming pale gray in age. Sporophores developing radially from the point of inoculation, irregularly branches or rarely simple, hyaline, ascending, or repent with stolons and rhizoids, 10-20 μm in diam, bearing verticillately fertile branch system. Rhizoids producing from the sites where sporophores falling and touching the substrate. Fertile branch system comprising 3-4 (rarely 5) times successive branches, getting shorter in order. Primary branches of fertile branch system straight, nearly perpendicular to the main axis, with verticillate 3-5 branches, or rarely 1-2, (62-)120-250 μm long, 6-10 μm in diam at base. Secondary and tertiary branches arising in verticil of usually 3-5 branches, rarely 1-2, variable in length. Secondary branches 75-157.5 μm in length and 4.5-9 μm in diam at base; tertiary branches occasionally being ultimate, 27.5-75 μm in length and 2.5-5 μm in diam at base. Ultimate branches often 1-3, terminated with fertile vesicles or sterile spinose prolongations, 3.5-16 μm long, 3-4.5 μm wide. Spinose prolongation tapering, 33.5-102 μm long, 3-5 μm wide at base, occasionally bearing a sporangiole at the tip. Fertile vesicles globoid to clavate at first, 5-7μm in diam, irregular and angular shape in age, bearing pedicellate sporangiola. One septum always present on terminal branch below the vesicle. Sporangiolar pedicels smooth, tapered, 2-4.5 μm long, 0.5-1 μm in diam at base, columella difficultly observed. Sporangiola globose to subglobose, wall thin, the size and shape similar to inner spore, 5.5-6.5 μm in diam, minutely roughened, hardly stained by cotton blue at mature. Zygospore not observed. Heterothallic.

Note: The smaller sporangiola and spores of C. brefeldii (5.5-6.5 μm in diam) can be served to distinguish this species from the larger spored C. jonesii (7-10 μm in diam ).
