Description: Basidiocarp resupinate, effuse, adnate, membranaceous, 50-120 μm thick in section. Hymenial surface purplish gray or gray, smooth, rarely cracked; margin thinning or determinate, brown. Hyphal system monomitic; hyphae simple-septate. Subiculum fairly uniform, composed of a basal layer, with compact texture; hyphae brownish, mainly horizontal, usually glued together, 2.5-4 μm diam., with 0.5-1 μm thick walls. Hymenium ± thickening. Hymenial layer with compact texture; hyphae colorless toward hymenium, slightly brown near subiculum, mainly vertical, thin- or slightly thick-walled. Lamprocystidia mostly immersed, heavily encrusted, conical, yellow or brown, 30-50 × 12-18 μm (encrustation included), with 1-3 μm thick walls. Gloeocystidia colorless, yellow, or slightly brown, cylindrical, quite often tapering to acute apices, 30-60 × 7-12 μm, thick-walled toward bases, SA-. Basidia subclavate or cylindrical, 25-40 × 4.5-5.7 μm, usually thick-walled toward base, 4-sterigmate. Basidiospores suballantoid, or cylindrical, adaxially slightly concave, smooth, thin-walled, 8-10.5 × 2.7-3.5 μm, IKI-, CB-.

Note: This species is very close to P. reidii due to similar morphological features. The latter has slightly wider basidiospores (3-4.6 μm) than the former (2.7-3.5 μm). Overlap of spore width exists between these two species. Peniophora borbonica has uninuleate basidiospores, while basidiocarp of P. reidii bears both uninuleate and binucleate basidiospores.
