Description: Basidiocarp at first forming orbicular patches, then widely effuse, adnate, membranaceous, 200-400 μm thick in section (aculei excluded). Hymenial surface Cinnamon-Buff to Olive Brown, hydnoid or raduloid due to fusion of aculei, sometimes cracked; margin paler, thinning, fibrillose, occasionally slightly recurved. Aculei separate or fused, 3-6 per mm, subulate or cylindrical, with acute or obtuse apices, apically ± fimbriate, 200-1200 × 100-300 μm. Hyphal system monomitic; hyphae nodose-septate. Subiculum bi-layered. Basal layer with compact texture, variably thick, up to ca. 50 μm; hyphae horizontal, yellowish or slightly brown, agglutinated. Medullary layer constituting main part of subiculum, with rather loose to ± dense texture; hyphae ± vertical, loosely interwoven, colorless, yellowish, or slightly brown, distinct, sometimes with small oil-drops, 2.5-5 (-5.5) μm diam., thin- or slightly thick-walled. Hymenial layer with dense texture, usually thin. Trama with rather compact texture, full of brownish yellow excreted material. Cystidia numerous, immersed or slightly projecting, cylindrical, irregularly apically or basally swollen, slightly flexuous, with homogeneous contents, 35-55 × 7-10.5 μm, thin-walled. Basidia clavate or subclavate, 20-30 × 6-6.7 μm, with four rather large sterigmata. Basidiospores subglobose, smooth, thin-walled, with homogeneous contents, 5.5-6.5 × 4.2-4.8 μm, IKI-, CB-.

Note: This species is easily identified by its brownish basidiocarp, hydnoid to raduloid hymenial surface and tubular leptocystidia, and by the subglobose basidiospores and their homogeneous contents. It has been reported from Taiwan by Jang and Chen (1985), who described both the genus and species as new (Pseudolagarobasidium leguminicola). When studying the holotype of the latter, I found that it represents the same species as Hydnum subvinosum of Berkeley and Broome (1875). There are some problems concerning the description of P. leguminicola. Jang and Chen (1985) found gloeocystidia in a young basidiocarp, which grew on wood-dust culture, but the cystidia from mature specimens have homogeneous contents with no oil-drops in them. The basidiospores were reported to be cyanophilous, but I found that their very thin walls of P. subvinosum had no cyanophilous reactions. No basidiospore could be found from the holotype (TAI 9020) of P. leguminicola; however, other characters of that collection agree with this species.
