Description: On surface of the stems, the fungus appears as conical swelling with a central, black, ostiolar perforation. Ascomata 500-800 μm wide, 540-700 μm high, solitary, scattered, immersed to erumpent, becoming superficial by shedding off the overlying periderm, occasionally surrounded by sparse stromata. Ostiole conical, papillate piercing the epidermis. Peridium 40-60 μm thick, composed of melanized, pseudoparenchymatous cells, the basal cells usually paler in colour and interwoven with the host tissues. Asci cylindrical, 125-175 × 6-8 μm, numerous, short stipitate, basal and peripheral, 8-spored, unitunicate, with a nonamyloid, pulvinate apical ring. Paraphyses numerous, septate, 2-4 μm wide. Ascospores elliptic-fusoid, 18-24 × 4-6 μm, rounded to slightly tapered at the ends, hyaline, uniseriate, equally separated into 4 segments by 3 septum-like lines, visible as 4 cells.
