Description: Apothecia 0.5-1.5 mm diam., scattered on the dead wood, nearly globose when young, opening to goblet-shaped, and finally shallow cup-shaped with a raised, even, circular margin at maturity, pale buff, covered externally with buff to ochraceous hairs with white to amber-colored resin at the tips, stipitate. Stipe cylindrical, less than 0.5 mm high, usually visible in unexpanded apothecia, but covered by the upper portion of the cup when expanded, usually darkened at the base. Hairs, up to 80 × 2.5-3.8(-5.0) μm, cylindrical with hemispherical tips covered with resinous-appearing masses dissolving in aqueous solution, thin-walled, hyaline, septate, roughened externally with tightly adhering granules. Ectal excipulum similar to that described for Lachnum abnorme. Asci (65-)72-80(-88) × 5-7(-9) μm, cylindrical with a tapered base and hemispherical apex, J+. Ascospores (15-)19-25(-28) × 1.6-2.4 μm, fusiform, straight, tapered at each end, bipolar or nearly so, 3-septate, hyaline, thin-walled. Paraphyses 1.6-2.4 μm, at widest portion, narrowly lanceolate with blunt apices, exceeding the asci by up to 12 μm, straight, unbranched, hyaline, thin-walled and non-septate in the upper half.

Note: Lachnum sclerotii is widespread throughout tropical regions, however in Taiwan it is less common than similar L. abnorme. It has been found in only a few locations in southern Taiwan but it is a dominate species of broad-leaved forest around Lujankenghsi in Mt. Chutzu of Yangmingshan National Park. It can be distinguished from L. abnorme in the field by the presence of amber-colored resin masses on the hair tips and microscopically by its distinctive three-septate spores. No difference in elevational preferences between the two species were evident from Taiwan collections.
