Description: Ascomata scattered, 300-360 μm wide, 280-420 μm high, rounded or flattened at the base, immersed, raising the overlapping host tissue, the upper portion of ascoma covered by a clypeus to give the ascoma superficial appearance; clypeus 10-15 μm thick, merging with the upper ascomatal wall, neck laterally compressed, up to 120 μm high, with a slit-like ostiole, the slit 80-150 μm long. Peridium 10-16 μm thick, composed of 4-6 layers of pale brown, elongate cells. Asci broadly clavate, 100-120 × 14-18 μm, short-stalked, stalk up to 30 μm long. Pseudoparaphyses branched, 2-3 μm wide. Ascospores broadly fusiform, 27-36 × 5.5-7 μm, slightly curved, 7-8-septed, usually guttulate in each cell, inconspicuously constricted at the first septum, the cell above the first septum broadest, smooth, yellowish brown, overlapping biseriate to tetraseriate in ascus, surrounded by a thin mucilaginous sheath which projects out to form appendages at each end.

Note: This is a very polymorphous species with a wide range of spore septation, from 3 septa to 7 septa. Holm and Holm (1988) considered these variations are continuous and largely divided this species into five varieties. The Taiwan material matches the description of variety ‘d’, but has up to 8 septate ascospores. This subtle difference can also be regarded as a progress of continuous variations.
