The Bioresource Collection and Research Center (BCRC) of the Food Industry Research and Development Institute (FIRDI) officially received the ISO 20387 Biobank Accreditation from the Taiwan Accreditation Foundation (TAF) on 2 October 2025 (Certification No.: BB001), becoming the first biobank in Taiwan to successfully achieve this international standard certification.

This milestone signifies the formal alignment of domestic biobank standardization activities with international norms. The certification scope covers the four core biobank operations — acquisition, preparation, storage, and distribution of fungal and bacterial biological materials — demonstrating that BCRC’s bioresource management, quality assurance, and standardized operational procedures meet world-class international standards.

The achievement highlights BCRC’s professional capabilities, impartiality, confidentiality, and consistency in biobank operations, and confirms its ability to provide high-quality biological materials and related information needed for research and development.

ISO 20387 is an international standard established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2018, specifically for biobanking. Its purpose is to ensure consistent and verifiable reliability in resource preservation, operational processes, quality control, and risk management. ISO 20387 has become a key metric for evaluating the professionalism and trustworthiness of biobanks among research institutions, biotechnology industries, and clinical research fields worldwide.

This accreditation represents a significant milestone for BCRC and reflects a major advancement for Taiwan in the field of bioresource preservation and biotechnology research. Through adherence to international biobank standards, BCRC will continue to support domestic scientific research and biotech industry needs by delivering high-quality biological materials and professional services, enhancing competitiveness, facilitating innovative research outcomes, and securing Taiwan’s position in the global biomedical research landscape
