Description: Growth in glucose-yeast extract-peptone broth: After 3 days at 25 °C, the cells are globose, ovoidal, ellipsoidal, or elongate (2.5-6.4 × 4.9-14.9 μm), single or in pairs. Vegetative reproduction is accomplished by multilateral budding. Sediment is present. Growth on glucose-yeast extract-peptone agar: After 3 days at 25 °C, the cells are globose, ovoidal, or ellipsoidal but not elongate (2.8-6.1 × 5.1-8.5 μm). After 7 days at 25 °C, streak cultures are creamy, butyrous, smooth, and glistening. Dalmau plate culture on corn meal agar: After 10 days at 25°C, pseudomycelium and mycelium are absent. Formation of ascospores: Sporulation was observed on YM agar, Fowell’s acetate agar, and malt extract agar after incubation at 18°C for 7 days. Cells can be directly transformed from diploid cells into asci containing one or two globose ascospores.
